I generally post a personal item at least once a week. If something particularly interesting pops up in construction contracting, I go with it when it is "breaking news." I also have Guest Post Fridays and try and fill Fridays as well with these to get 2 a week at Musings.

This is a matter of time and balancing a practice and blogging because blogging is not my business, but something I enjoy and that allows me to get content out consistently.

The problem with too many "legal" blogs isn't too much posting, but too little. Far too many people jump into blogging without realizing what is at stake, and don't keep up with it.

It's a sad site to go to a blog and see the last post was from 4 months ago. At that point, they might as well take it down and just put up a static website, which won't be as embarrassing.

I try to post to my blog at least 3 times a week. I also think it is important to encourage and get guest posters for you blog if you can. I like to give my readers someone else to read and another point of view is always nice.

When I first started my family law blog, which I no longer post on, I was posting every day for the first 3 months. By doing so, I saw great results in both traffic and search engine results. But best of all, I started to get a lot of inquiries concerning my legal services.

I now post and blog for my business and not a law practice. But the concept is the same. The more posting you do, the more information you are providing to your readers. Which as James mentions, can be a double edge sword. I too received complaints that there was just too much.

You will need to gauge your own audience to see what level of posting is right for them.

I can chime in here after blogging for 2 1/2 years :-) I had always heard 3 to 4 times per week. It seemed arbitrary after first until I started thinking of it as a marathon, not a sprint. You have to be able to maintain a pace which works for your life. It shouldn't be an all or nothing proposition.

I also started creating regular 'columns' such as "Tip of the Week" which appeared on Sundays, "Passed the Bar- Hung a shingle" and "Going Solo; Confessions and Inspirations." These appeared on certain days of the week. I evolved into a regular substantive piece on Mondays, PBHS and Going Solo appeared on Thursdays. The regularity kept it easier for me to do and the readership looked forward to it.

I find too frequent postings IS too much for the readers and you are wasting valuable quality posting. Each post should have some legs.

And, clearly when I got burnt out on blogging I would let my readership know I was taking a break and why, provide links to back posts which were popular and let them know when I'd be back to regular posting.

We blog for business and numbers, so we may have different reasons and goals, but since you asked...

We posted once a day, every day, for about a year. After that, we decided it was time to slow down a bit - readers were complaining they didn't have time to read, think or come comment before a new post went up. We stopped blogging on weekends, then last July moved down to three posts a week (M, W, F).

It's been great. Perfect pace, I think - for us and for our readers.
